Gas vs. Electric Furnaces: Pros and Cons

When choosing a furnace, the two main options are gas and electric. Each has its advantages and drawbacks, so it's essential to consider efficiency, cost, and long-term benefits.

Gas Furnaces

Gas furnaces use natural gas or propane to produce heat, effectively maintaining a warm and cozy indoor environment throughout the colder seasons. They work by burning gas to produce heat, which is then distributed through your home via ducts. Praised for their dependable performance and energy efficiency, gas furnaces are a top choice for keeping homes warm and cozy throughout the colder months.

Pros:

  • Lower operational costs compared to electric furnaces.
  • Heats homes quickly and efficiently, even in extreme cold.
  • Long lifespan with proper maintenance.

Cons:

  • Requires a natural gas connection, which may not be available in all areas.
  • Higher initial installation cost.
  • Potential safety risks if not maintained properly.

Gas furnaces are an excellent choice for homeowners looking for cost-effective, powerful heating—but they do require proper installation and maintenance to ensure safety.

Electric Furnaces

Electric furnaces are heating systems that use electricity to generate heat, providing a reliable and energy-efficient way to warm homes or spaces. They are often compact, easy to install, and require less maintenance compared to gas furnaces, making them a popular choice for modern heating needs.

Pros:

  • Lower upfront installation cost.
  • Safer operation—no risk of carbon monoxide leaks.
  • Easier maintenance and longer life expectancy.

Cons:

  • Higher energy costs, making long-term operation more expensive.
  • Slower heating compared to gas furnaces.
  • May struggle to heat large homes efficiently.

Electric furnaces offer a safe and low-maintenance heating solution, but depending on local electricity rates, they may cost more to operate.

Single-Stage, Two-Stage, and Modulating Furnaces: What’s the Difference?

Selecting the right furnace type can significantly impact your home's comfort and energy efficiency. Here’s a breakdown of the three main types:

  • Single-Stage Furnaces: Single-stage furnaces have only one setting: on or off. They operate at full capacity whenever running, which can lead to noticeable temperature fluctuations as the furnace continuously cycles to maintain the desired temperature, resulting in less energy efficiency.
  • Two-Stage Furnaces: Two-stage furnaces offer two settings: low and high. They typically run on the lower setting for steady, efficient heating and switch to high when more heat is needed. This provides better temperature control, improved comfort, and lower energy consumption over time.
  • Modulating Furnaces: Modulating furnaces adjust their heat output gradually in small increments to match your home's exact heating needs. They offer the most precise temperature control, greater energy efficiency, consistent comfort, and quieter operation compared to other furnace types.

Choosing the right furnace type depends on your home’s needs and your budget. Whether you prioritize energy efficiency, comfort, or precise temperature control, understanding these options can help you make the best decision for your home.

How to Test Your Furnace After Installation

Once your new furnace is installed, follow these steps to ensure it’s working correctly:

  • Check the Thermostat: Begin by switching your thermostat to heating mode and raising the temperature to activate the furnace. Ensure it starts up and runs smoothly. If it doesn’t, check the thermostat settings, replace the batteries if needed, or refer to the user manual for troubleshooting steps.
  • Listen for Unusual Noises: Pay attention to any strange sounds, such as rattling, banging, or whistling, coming from your heating system. These noises could signal problems such as loose components, clogged filters, or mechanical issues that may need professional attention. Ignoring these sounds might lead to larger, costlier repairs down the line.
  • Feel for Even Heating: Walk through your home to check if all rooms are being heated evenly. Cold spots or inconsistencies between rooms can indicate issues with your heating system, such as blocked vents, poor insulation, or problems with the ductwork. Addressing these issues early can improve comfort and energy efficiency.
  • Inspect the Airflow: Ensure warm air is coming through all vents in your home. If airflow feels weak or uneven, check for obstructions like furniture blocking the vents or dirty filters that may need cleaning or replacing. Proper airflow is crucial for efficient heating and maintaining consistent room temperatures.

If you notice any problems, contact us right away to ensure your system is running at peak performance!

I called Renhard, on the recommendation of a neighbor, when our heat pump quit in the middle of winter. They came out the next morning and we were up and running in a couple of hours. We had 2 different service calls from another service, and many $ later we still experiencing problems. They said we probably needed a complete new system. Loren was able to diagnose what they failed to address, and fixed it for a 1/3 of the cost.I couldn't recommend Renhard more highly.

Joe came out and helped me diagnose a furnace problem in 5 minutes (thermostat was the culprit). I was even late getting home and he waited for me for ~15 minutes. I told him I already had a thermostat on order so he didn’t even charge me for the service call. Excellent and fast service - I had only called the day before. Highly recommend!
